Following a year in which BMI saw signs of recovery, 2012 will signal further growth, albeit it at a slower pace on the back of the macroeconomic outlook.

BMI View: Oil production in Norway may be in decline, but the country retains considerable upside gas potential and should continue to be a major force in European energy supply for decades to come. Discoveries of considerable size are clearly still possible, with the Sverdrup (formerly Aldous/Avaldsnes) prospect containing a potential 2.2-2.8bn barrels of recoverable oil. This should stimulate fresh investment on the part of domestic and foreign operators and delay any decline in output.

Kuwait's ports have struggled to recover the volumes they enjoyed prior to the global economic downturn, but BMI expects this largely to be achieved in 2012, with only total tonnage throughput at Shuaiba not forecast to recoup lost levels until 2013. If there are continued instances of industrial unrest and strikes, however, as Kuwait's ports have struggled with since the Arab Spring of 2011, then we may have to revise our forecasts down. The air freight sector was also hit in 2011, with volumes actually falling. 2012 has not started well, and we are forecasting very slow growth in tonnage at Kuwait International Airport in 2012.

BMI View: South African IT spending to increase to about US$17.6bn in 2016, at a US dollar 2012-2016 CAGR of 10%, slower than previously forecast. Major infrastructure and transport projects will provide encouragement for growth during BMI's five-year forecast period. Most opportunities are likely to be in sectors such as wholesale and retail trade and financial and personal services, which will grow faster, while other verticals like mining and manufacturing suffer a slowdown. However, South African businesses are expected to maintain a cautious attitude to IT investments, due to continued global economic uncertainty.

BMI View: Kuwait is in the middle of a large infrastructure expansion project that will increase access to healthcare and opportunities for drugmakers and healthcare providers looking to take part in publicprivate partnerships (PPPs). However, the country still has some way to go in terms of legislating for a dynamic healthcare industry, and political stalemate is hindering progress.

We have trimmed our growth forecasts for Indonesia in 2012 and 2013, but only marginally so. BMI's view is that the slowdown in the global economy, and in Chinese growth which will for the first time in the last decade come in at under 8%, will have a knock-on effect on Indonesia. On the other hand, the country's domestic economy is in fairly rude health, with consumer spending looking solid and investment also performing well as the government and the private sector begin to tackle the often postponed need to expand and update infrastructure. BMI now expects the Indonesian economy to grow by 5.8% in 2012 (down from 5.9% in our last quarterly report); our outlook is for GDP growth of 6.2% in 2013 (was 6.3%). In the five years to 2016 we expect growth to average 6.2% per annum, confirming the country as a regional outperformer.

The Greece Tourism Report considers the prospects for the tourism sector over the longer term but focuses heavily on major short-term issues affecting the sector. Last year witnessed a strong rebound for inbound tourism to Greece, despite strikes and protests against government austerity measures (eroding Greece's risk profile). Reports that prices in the hospitality sector in important tourist locations have fallen sharply - an effective internal devaluation - represent one underlying issue behind this uptick in inbound tourism. Political unrest in North Africa provides another reason, as it has resulted in a shift in tourism demand, providing a short-term boost to Greek tourism. Despite this, BMI believes that a marked slowdown in the eurozone - the key source region - will dampen prospects for Greek tourism in 2012. A full-blown economic depression in Greece will also ensure domestic tourism remains extremely weak.

BMI View: For a country keen to wean itself off of fossil fuels, the decision to phase out nuclear energy represents a fresh and unwelcome challenge. Gas consumption seems certain to grow more quickly than expected as demand for power rises - until the energy void can be filled through the expansion of renewable sources.

From non-existent production in 2011, BMI predicts that 27,000 vehicles will be assembled in Bulgaria in 2012. All will be produced at the Lovech plant, which has a designed capacity of 50,000 units a year, though we do not expect this total to be reached by 2016, rather production is likely to be just shy of 33,000 at 32,618 units. Most of the vehicles produced will be exported and with the beginning of production this year Bulgaria will become a net exporter of new vehicles. Sales of new vehicles are expected to slow in 2012 to 3.5% y-o-y, down from 17.71% in 2011.
