BMI View: Following South Africa's 2011 post-World Cup hangover, we are gradually seeing a return to slow but steady economic growth, with real GDP of 2.7% forecast for 2012. This positive trend is supported by Q112 construction data showing that the sector increased 2% year-on-year (y-o-y), indicating that the slump has finally reached its bottom. However, despite a concentrated effort on infrastructure investment in 2012, we believe the risks to this cautiously optimistic outlook are plentiful, ranging from policy uncertainty and cumbersome bureaucracy to intense credit rating pressure. This is prompting us to maintain our healthy, yet modest, construction industry real growth forecast for 2012 of 2.5%.

BMI View: Malaysian IT spending is expected to reach US$5.2bn in 2012, up 6%, despite the economic headwinds from the Eurozone and the US. Demand is expected to stay resilient overall, even as economic growth moderates. There should be several areas of opportunity, particularly in key spending verticals such as telecoms, and a new government Digital Malaysia Plan is expected to be unveiled in 2012.

BMI View: Colombia's oil sector has seen impressive levels of growth since the mid-2000s and we expect that positive trend to continue throughout our 10-year forecast period, with oil production expected to surpass 1mn barrels per day (b/d) in 2013. This growth will be driven by an improving security situation, which should allow for expanded exploration activities, improved transport infrastructure and an attractive fiscal regime.

Cooling external demand and deteriorating global economic conditions would inevitably take their toll on consumer confidence in the near future. Moreover, as uncertainties over the outlook for employment in export-related sectors continue to weigh on sentiment and prompt households to cut back on spending, we believe private consumption growth should remain relatively muted over the coming quarters. In the longer term, the positives of a massive youth population, strong economic growth and rising incomes will remain major draws for foreign consumer goods investors. This potential will continue to attract the sights of consumer players such as Meiji Holdings, Fraser and Neave and Mai Tan, which should instil greater dynamism to the sector going forward.

The Philippines Insurance report considers the prospects for both life and non-life insurers in the country. BMI remains of the view that how the Philippines' insurance sector develops through 2012 will provide a useful indicator of overall trends in political, business and economic risk in the country. The statistic that we would highlight is that the trade association, and BMI, forecast life insurance premiums in 2012 that are 80% higher than those of 2009. It appears that there is a very high probability that the segment will emerge from three years of near stagnation in terms of premiums. Various commentators are excited about the prospects for micro-insurance in the Philippines. While we accept that growth in the segment may be driven over the coming years by an increase in the number of first time users, we continue to believe that the expansion will be driven mainly by the initiatives that are undertaken by particular companies. The segment is dominated by Philam Life, the local subsidiary of AIA, along with the local offshoots of Manulife, AXA, Sun Life Financial and Prudential plc. These are all companies with regional (or global) scale, strong brand names, a very long-standing commitment to both the Philippines and Asia Pacific, capital and tolerance of emerging markets risk. As we explain in this report, these companies are developing by enlarging their existing distribution channels, improving the productivity of distribution channels, introducing new products or developing new partnerships. Crucially, though, households in the Philippines that can afford to provide for the future are increasingly enthusiastic about taking on long-term relationships with major life insurance companies.

BMI View: In light of India's economic and demographic growth, we expect power consumption to increase from an estimated 747.26 terawatt hours (TWh) in 2011 to 1,386.40TWh in 2021. The country's 12th Five Year Plan forecasts energy demand will grow 6% per annum and electricity capacity will expand by 100 gigawatts (GW). Critical to the new plan is the focus on measures to combat the continued rise in India's dependence on imported energy, and a move to favour diversification towards renewable sources as well as nuclear. The recent FY2012/13 budget announcement is indicative of this focus, with the Indian government initiating a series of incentives and measures that will benefit the power sector
